Taste problems

Unwanted tastes are the most common water complaint. They are almost always harmless.

Appearance problems

Discolouration or cloudiness in water is usually temporary and caused by a specific event.

Smell problems

Most water odours have a simple cause. Rotten egg smell from the hot tap is particularly common.

Pressure problems

Low pressure can be caused by your own plumbing or a wider supply issue.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my tap water taste of chlorine?

Chlorine is added intentionally as a disinfectant. It is safe at UK levels. Let water stand in the fridge for 30 minutes or use an activated carbon filter jug — both remove chlorine effectively.

Is cloudy tap water safe to drink?

Usually yes — it is normally air bubbles trapped under pressure. Pour a glass and wait 30 seconds. If it clears from bottom to top, it is harmless dissolved air and safe to drink.

Why is my tap water brown?

Usually iron or manganese disturbed in water mains after nearby maintenance work. Run the cold tap for 15–20 minutes. Do not drink it until it runs clear — it is not acutely toxic but should not be consumed while discoloured.

What causes a metallic taste in tap water?

Usually copper or lead leaching from old household pipes. Run the tap for 30 seconds before use. Homes built before 1970 may have lead supply pipes — contact your water company for a free lead test.

Why does my water smell like rotten eggs?

Hydrogen sulphide from bacteria growing in a hot water cylinder set below 60°C. Ensure your hot water temperature is set to at least 60°C. If the smell comes from the cold tap, contact your water company immediately.

Is low water pressure a health risk?

No, but it can indicate plumbing issues. Check your internal stop valve is fully open (usually under the kitchen sink). If neighbours are also affected, contact your water company as it may be a mains issue.
