About MyTapWater

Why we built this, where the data comes from, and what we believe about transparency in public water supply.

What is MyTapWater?

MyTapWater is a free public tool that makes UK water quality data accessible to everyone. Water companies publish detailed annual compliance reports — but they're dense, technical, and scattered across 21 different websites. We've aggregated all of it into a single, simple postcode lookup.

Enter your postcode and in seconds you'll know the hardness, nitrate levels, fluoride, lead, chlorine, and dozens of other parameters for your specific water zone — presented in plain English.

Where does the data come from?

All data is sourced directly from official annual compliance reports published by UK water companies and submitted to the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI). The data covers the 2025 reporting year.

For enforcement and improvement programme data, we use the DWI's public register of active improvement programmes — 398 active notices across England and Wales as of March 2026.

Scottish Water data comes from their own public water quality reporting system, regulated by the Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland (DWQR).

How is the score calculated?

The water quality score (out of 100) is calculated from four weighted categories:

  • Safety (40%) — how each parameter compares to its Prescribed Concentration Value (PCV), the legal limit set by the DWI
  • Purity (25%) — levels of chlorine, turbidity, colour, and aluminium
  • Minerals (20%) — hardness in the optimal range (100–200 mg/L CaCO3)
  • Compliance (15%) — whether the zone has any active enforcement notices

Important: All UK tap water legally meets safety standards. The score reflects overall quality and mineral balance relative to ideal ranges — not whether the water is safe to drink. UK tap water is safe to drink.
