If you live in a hard water area — and if you're in London, the South East, East Anglia, or the Midlands, you almost certainly do — a water softener is one of the most cost-effective home appliance investments available. The UK has some of Europe's hardest water, with London and Cambridge exceeding 300 mg/L CaCO₃. At this hardness, limescale damages boilers, washing machines, dishwashers, and showerheads, and significantly increases energy bills.

Water softeners work by ion exchange. A resin bed inside the softener exchanges the calcium and magnesium ions in hard water (which cause limescale) for sodium ions. The result is softened water — no hardness, no limescale. The resin is periodically regenerated with salt (sodium chloride), restoring its exchange capacity. Modern softeners use 2–5 kg of salt per week for an average household.

Cost-benefit analysis of a water softener

A good water softener costs £1,200–£2,500 installed plus £150–£250 per year in salt. The benefits include: boiler efficiency improvement of 10–15% (limescale is a highly effective insulator on heating elements), extended appliance life (washing machines, boilers, and dishwashers last significantly longer in soft water areas with softeners), reduced detergent and shower gel use (soft water lathers much more easily), and reduced cleaning time and products for bathrooms and kitchens. A 2009 BRE study found water softeners save the average household approximately £200–£400 per year in reduced energy and cleaning costs in very hard water areas.

Which areas most need a water softener?

The areas where a water softener provides the most benefit are those with hardness above 200 mg/L CaCO₃: London and the Home Counties (Thames Water, 250–330 mg/L), East Anglia (Anglian Water, Cambridge Water, 280–360 mg/L), the South East (Southern Water, South East Water, 180–310 mg/L), parts of the East Midlands (Severn Trent, Anglian Water, 150–220 mg/L), and Oxford and Reading (Thames Water, 250–280 mg/L). Enter your postcode above to check your exact hardness level.

Important note: softeners and PFAS

Water softeners do NOT remove PFAS, nitrates, bacteria, chlorine, or other contaminants. They only remove hardness (calcium and magnesium). If you live in a PFAS improvement notice area and want to address both hardness and PFAS, you need a water softener for hardness plus a separate reverse osmosis point-of-use filter for drinking water. Many households in London use both.
