Shower filters remove chlorine and other contaminants from shower water, with claimed benefits for skin and hair health. Unlike drinking water filters, shower filters address the contaminants you are exposed to through skin absorption and inhalation during a shower — routes of exposure that are separate from drinking.
The primary active media in most shower filters is KDF-55 (Kinetic Degradation Fluxion) — a blend of copper and zinc granules that removes chlorine through a redox (oxidation-reduction) reaction. KDF-55 is also effective at reducing heavy metals including lead, mercury, and arsenic, and partially reduces limescale. Some shower filters also include activated carbon or vitamin C media for additional chlorine reduction.
The main argument for shower filtration is chlorine. Chlorine is added to tap water to kill bacteria, and at typical UK concentrations (0.1–0.5 mg/L) it is safe to drink. However, hot showers can cause chlorine and chloramine to vaporise — and there is some evidence that inhaled chlorine in shower steam may irritate airways in sensitive individuals. People with asthma, eczema, or sensitive skin sometimes report improvement after installing a shower filter. The evidence is mixed and individual experiences vary, but the mechanism is plausible.
Shower filters provide partial limescale reduction — KDF media creates a complex with calcium that reduces its adhesion to surfaces, partially reducing limescale buildup on showerheads. This is not the same as a water softener, which fully removes hardness. For serious limescale problems (London, South East, East Anglia), a whole-house water softener is more effective than a shower filter for limescale.
Most shower filters install between the existing shower hose and the showerhead — the same way a standard shower head replacement works. This requires no tools beyond hand tightening, takes under 5 minutes, and is reversible. Some filters fit between the wall outlet and the flexible hose. Check the fitting size matches your shower before purchasing (most UK showers use 1/2 BSP standard fittings, which most filters accommodate).
Shower filters do NOT remove PFAS from shower water. If you are concerned about PFAS exposure, a reverse osmosis drinking water filter addresses dietary exposure. PFAS dermal absorption through showering is generally considered negligible compared to dietary intake, but those with strong concerns should note that shower filters do not address PFAS.

Only reverse osmosis (RO) filters certified to NSF/ANSI 58 remove PFAS from tap water. Standard carbon filters, jug filters, and water softeners do NOT remove PFAS.
Filter cartridges in shower filters systems typically need replacing every 6–12 months. Check the manufacturer's specification for your specific model.
