What this filter removes
✓ PFAS (NSF/ANSI 58 certified) ✓ Lead ✓ Nitrates and nitrites ✓ Fluoride ✓ Arsenic ✓ Bacteria and viruses ✓ Microplastics ✓ Pesticides ✓ Heavy metals ✓ Chlorine
What this filter does NOT remove
✗ Minerals (remineralisation cartridge recommended)

Reverse osmosis (RO) is the most comprehensive water purification technology available for home use. It removes 95–99% of virtually all dissolved contaminants — including PFAS forever chemicals, lead, nitrates, fluoride, arsenic, bacteria, viruses, and microplastics — in a single stage. No other point-of-use technology comes close to RO for breadth of contaminant removal.

The principle is elegant: water is forced under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane with pores of approximately 0.0001 µm — roughly 200,000 times smaller than a human hair. This pore size is small enough to exclude dissolved ions, molecules, and all particles. Water molecules are small enough to pass through; almost everything else is rejected and flushed to drain. The result is water with extremely low TDS (total dissolved solids) — essentially mineral-free, contaminant-free water.

Countertop vs under-sink RO: which is right for you?

Under-sink RO systems (Waterdrop G3, generic tankless systems) are installed beneath the kitchen sink and connect to the cold water supply. They require a separate dedicated tap (a small hole in the sink or worktop). A plumber or confident DIYer can install most modern under-sink RO systems in 30–60 minutes. They produce on-demand filtered water at the tap. Under-sink RO is ideal for homeowners and those who want high-volume output.

Countertop RO systems (AquaTru, Reverse Osmosis Revolution) sit on the worktop and plug into a standard socket. Water is poured in manually. No plumbing required — ideal for renters, flats, or anyone unable to install under-sink plumbing. Countertop units are more expensive per litre but offer complete flexibility and portability. AquaTru is one of the few countertop RO systems certified to NSF/ANSI 58 for PFAS removal.

Waste water in RO systems

All RO systems produce "waste water" — the reject stream that carries away the concentrated contaminants flushed from the membrane. Older systems had very poor efficiency — 4+ litres of waste for every litre produced. Modern tankless systems like the Waterdrop G3 achieve 2:1 or 3:1 ratios (2–3 litres waste per litre produced). This waste water can be collected and used for garden watering, toilet flushing, or mopping — eliminating the waste concern entirely if you are environmentally conscious.

Remineralisation

RO removes all minerals from water — including calcium and magnesium that are beneficial. Many people find RO water tastes flat compared to mineral water. Modern RO systems include a remineralisation cartridge (typically limestone or mineral balls) that re-adds a small amount of calcium and magnesium after RO filtration, improving taste and adding beneficial minerals back. Look for systems that include a remineralisation stage — it makes a significant difference to taste.
